“Turkey 🇹🇷 ~On Our Walking Self-Tour Istanbul“
It was an absolute joy and delight to go on a walking tour of Istanbul, that would lead us to the impressive Balat neighborhood. Our friend and landlord, Taskin showed us the way and we enjoyed our day, together, very much
It is wintertime here in Turkey, so we wait for the beautiful sunshine and blue skies to appear, before we get out. When the sun shines, it’s cool and comfortable for some good excessive by brisk walking. There are plenty of hilly neighborhoods where we are heading. When it rains, we tend to stay in our flat and let it storm. If we go out in the rain, it will only be to GI the the market, or to enjoy the Turkish Baths.
Today was perfect for our outing. We came across the beautiful “Red Church,” as it is fondly named by the locals. Also along the way, we could spy old parts of the ancient stronghold walls from a bygone era, lots of friendly, cats, and dogs, old and some less old Turkish architecture, plenty of busy shops and their keepers, with plenty of the locals going about their daily lives.
There is always something to see here in Turkey!
two from the Harry Potter movies came to mind for me; though no association to the series.
The current school building is located near the Church of St. George in Fener (Phanar), Istanbul, which is the seat of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Known among the locals with nicknames such as The Red Castle, The Red School, The Red Chirch, or Kırmızı Mektep, this large building is without doubt one of the most beautiful and dominant structures on the Golden Horn.
Designed by the Ottoman Greek architect; Dimadis, the building was constructed between 1881 and 1883 with an eclectic mix of different styles.
