“USA 🇺🇸 Alaska ~Homer Halibut and Cod Fishing for Daryl AND the Nesting Eagles at Scenic Baycrest KOA”

Homer, Alaska

On this day, Daryl got to go on an Ocean Charter with Alaskan Fishing Adventures to fish, primarily for Halibut.

No clear address for the dock number, but it was behind the Salty Dawg Saloon. I remember going into this Saloon in the 90’s.

The Homer Spit is a 4.5-mile natural finger of land extending into Kachemak Bay, and it is a vital component of the local economy, supporting both the marine trades industry and commercial fishing. Homer lands more halibut than any other port in the world, earning it the title “Halibut Capital of the World.”

Aside from catching his limit of two Halibut, he caught his share of Cod as well. So between the Salmon fishing out of Soldotna, last week, and this fishing, today, our freezer is looking really good!!! BTW, I love to fish, too, but I’ve had the opportunity to do so, on a prior trip to Alaska. This is Daryls first Alaska trip. (My third)  This charter cost around $425, for one thing, and the other is, we live in our Motorhome, full-time, and have one residential (fridge) freezer. I caught a Halibut that weighed well over 100 pounds (that was about six of seven of the little Halibut that Daryl caught). No brag, just fact. For that price we would not have wanted to give away fish, because our freezer was too full.
You never know how the fishing will go, till it’s done.

While Daryl was fishing, I was back at The Whale enjoying our first sunny morning in weeks! Here at the Baycrest KOA there are two amazing things.
1. A beautiful view of the bay, and 2. A pair of nesting American Bald Eagles.

The Eagles were feeling the beautiful morning, too and were putting on quite a show; soaring all around. The sun did not last for long, but I kept clicking my camera, just for fun.

Today, we are catching the walk-on Ferry on the Spit and going to Seldovia, across the bay, just for the day.

As I’m writing this blog, Chelsie has made it from Atlanta, Georgia to Houston, Texas. She has a few hour layover, then she makes her way to Anchorage by this evening. She is changing into a time zone, with an additional four hours, making this entire flight possible, all in one day.
Given that we are over 200 miles from Anchorage, Chels will get to enjoy exploring Anchorage with an overnight and a part of the day. Tomorrow, we will pick her up as we go through Anchorage, to our next stop of  Palmer.
We have a lot more fun excursions coming up!!!!

*********
On a sadder note, Jonah has been in another mechanic shop, because she wouldn’t start again, while in Homer. This time we have alternator issues AND the worst part; a front end issue on the passenger side. (Daryl fixed the left side tie-rod issue on the driver side, while at our Denali stop).
The mechanic in Homer was not able to help with the bearing issue and the VW and he deemed it unsafe to drive. SOOOO, another flatbed will take her to a mechanic in Anchorage in the morning, that has a lift and expertise in classic cars.
I know of many problems other According to an RVers group I’m in, of many Alaska travelers, others have had issues, too. I know from this it can be worse, like hitting a 1500 pound moose, big rigs, LITERALLY, falling of the roadway, broken trailers with fridges and cupboards falling off, inside, flat tires, broken transmissions, failed brakes, and so much more.  We are just one of many, trying to have the best time, for the effort.

Life Happens, no matter where you are.

Don’t even get me started on how angry we both are with the guy who we paid so much money to, who refurbished our Jonah in a years time. We are basically redoing it again, and bleeding money we don’t have. It’s beyond insane.
Between renting a vehicle and taxis, since Tok, Alaska, it’s cost us over $500 extra to keep our trip going! We lose far more money in deposits, if we don’t make our commitments….. not to mention the expense to drive up to Alaska. We don’t want to miss a thing, after all that.
I know people say sell it, but it isn’t running good enough right now to do that, and we are in Alaska.

Did I mention we are in Alaska? 😜
If we had a money tree, we would walk away, and buy another vehicle. Yes, we are in quite the jam and pickle.
We have to have a car. 😭
