“USA 🇺🇸 Alaska ~Seldovia Village Ferry Ride from Homer Spit and a Day in Seldovia”

Seldovia Village, Alaska ⬇️
The name Seldovia is derived the Russian word “seldevoy,” meaning “herring bay.”
We had a very fun day. Seldovia is really interesting and has the old-time Alaska feel, but includes an artsy, whimsical flair. The town is very small.

Seldovia is renowned for its berry picking. Blueberries grow so thick you can often rake your fingers through the bushes and fill a two-quart bucket in minutes. Low-bush cranberries and salmonberries are also abundant.
Selfovia Village is only 352 acres in size. I wasn’t sure what we would do for the 1/2 day, but if you add in a meal, restaurants are few, so that takes a couple of hours, due to the number of people also eating, who are there for a limited amount of time. So overall, it was just the right amount of time.
The Historic Boardwalk was the best, going to the right, after walking up the ramp from the harbor. The tide was out, so those who brought their fishing gear to fish of the bridge, had no water to do so.

⬇️ We also enjoyed stopping at the Russian Orthodox Church. Just walk up the steps to the top of the hill, to find the little Church, tucked behind the trees. It was locked, so unable to enter, but peeked in the (dirty) windows, by using our cameras.

The church, a landmark on the Kenai Peninsula, began around 1820. The first church was made of logs, down along the beach. The present church is believed to have been built in 1891 and named St Nicholas at that time.
The bell tower was installed in 1906. In 1981 the church was restored and reconsecrated.

⬆️ ⬇️ We chose Jack and Aiva for our meal. Great Fish (Cod) and Chips! In addition, the Bald Eagles are flying all around, outside the restaurant, around their deck.

We were completely filled up with all things Seldovia, by the time we boarded the return ferry by 4:15PM.
We awoke to a beautiful sunny morning on this Seldovia day! We’ve had so few of those in the three weeks we’ve been on the Kenai Peninsula, it is something to celebrate.
⬇️ We left our Campground and headed down the hill to the Homer Spit, where the harbor is. The spit is pretty cool, and there is a boardwalk area there, too.

The Salty Dawg Saloon is very iconic. It’s been around a long time. In the 90’s I visited and stuck a one dollar bill on the wall, like so many other visitors.
I later heard, the owners collect all the money every now and again. and donate it to a good cause…

Since our car broke down, we were unable to drive around and play around the spit, like planned. Our focus has to be keeping our added excursions going, since taxis are pricey, $72 for a 15 minute ride. $35 for a 10 minute one, in Homer….just one way
We would enjoy sunshine till half way through our Seldovia arrival. The rain held off, though, but the sea was rough on the return. The Ferry boat was comfortable and handled it. The ferry ride each way was about 45 minutes.
