“Serbia and Being Lost and Found on the Road to Novi Sad”

We set off to visit the Fortress, just down the road. It was Sunday morning and streets are busiest on this day, all the locals are out for some exploring as well. We arrived at 11 AM and the parking was just filling up. We buy tickets and they have different prices for access to more areas. Luckily, they gave us the easy access to the lower ares. It is good because they wanted us to wear good shoes for hiking and we only wear flip flops. When we tried to go to the top the flip flop police would not let us go. If they only knew all the places these sandals have been. It is very hot, so maybe another good reason not to climb all the way up to the top. This is a spectacular looking Fortress from the outside, but it did not wow us on the inside. Perhaps we have seen so many around the world.

We spent the day driving through beautiful countryside to reach an area that was a long drive away. We got an overpriced room, where the air conditioning broke in the middle of the night. They gave us a discount that paid for our food.

We set out on a desperate search for this huge canyon on the Danube River. Our lady in the maps app was playing a game and sent us to a neighborhood that had a gate. Iron Gate was our destination. Then our phones went dry, so we had no maps; no 3G at all. We continued on, hoping for signage to lead the way. As we got close the signs are no where to be found, we ended up in the capital city of Belgrade.l, which obviously we saw coming. I refilled the phones, but nobody spoke English, so we could not pick a plan and the phone went dead in about 15 minutes. We drove with blind folds on, so to speak, endlessly going down roads. I found another place to refill our phones. Again, nobody spoke English and no help. The phone dies again. We set our course for Novi Sad. No phones to help and we could not find a hotel, I find a young girl in a grocery store that spoke English and she helped a little, but she could not help with the phone as she was working. We go where she said and found a hotel just where we needed to be, in the center square area.

I set out with my phone in hand, I got some cash and found a girl who spoke English and she offered to help. We got refilled again, and she showed me how to set up the phone for a plan. Finally we can have some fun.

I run to go get Bunny (ha ha), and we go explore the town center. What an interesting area; two days of unpleasant travel stress, and finally nirvana. There was bars, restaurants and popcorn. A man was entertaining the kids with a net, making a millions of bubbles. The kids where jumping and running around trying to catch them. One little girl got one big bubble stuck around her head, what a sight.

The architecture and statues are so unique. I love the feel of this area, as it turns out there is a lot to do here, but Bunny knew that in advance. She is a good travel agent. I would not be able to do what we do without her!

Are you able to get paper maps anywhere? Although I feel like I know you both well enough that you kind of LIKE being lost (and then found) I wonder if you could print out a page or two from Google if/when you have access to a printer. Sorry to hear about the broken a/c but at least they gave you a discount for it!! Gorgeous pics (as always) and LOL at the poor little bubble-headed girl. Stay safe, ya’ll. <3
You do know us, well, by now. I would say this level of lost, was aggravating, unlike a fun lost, where something grand happens as a result. We traveled in Taiwan and South Korea and had these moments. Some countries are just hard to figure out, because the lack of signs and English. It is part of the whole show, but some days are just hard than others. Getting copies of maps from the phone is a great idea, but the problem is (besides printing he map lady isn’t right all the time, either. She says go left, when the map indicates right. Rerouting is an indicator we are off course, so a printout wouldn’t help as much a I wish it would. Thank you for your kind thoughts on that, Laurie.Yes, the business owners and staff are good about adjusting things. Its been continual and positive, thankfully. We never thought we would ever tour Europe in the summer, because of the heat, but we had a grand opportunity and seized it. We will always remember this time, because the covid summer made for so much less tourists, on narrow roads, with crazy drivers! thx for the compliment. We enjoy the photography. with my brain, its about the only way I can keep our travels straight. 80 countries and the last 35; one after the other is A LOT. Again, we are grateful we can do this.
The bubble head girl was a great capture!
