USA 🇺🇸 ~North Carolina “Sunset Beach and Bird Island The Kindred Spirit Mailbox for Chelsie’s Birthday July 2025”
Once I learned Sunset Beach and Bird Island in North Carolina, held a super cool treasure, I just had to make it happen for Chelsie’s Birthday!!!
The Novel: “Every Breath” by Nicolas Sparks
The Location: Bird Island on Sunset Beach, North Carolina that inspired the Novel about
“The Kindred Spirit Mailbox”
I’m a huge fan of book reading and love a good Novel. Chelsie enjoys a few of the same authors I do, but as a mom to three, she doesn’t get as much reading time in, but I wanted to bring this one particular book to life for her, and I planned the Birthday celebration around this special location. I kept the visit to the Kindred Mailbox a secret, till we arrived. All she knew is, it would involve a walk on a special beach at sunset.
Many people have heard of the author; Nicholas Sparks. A few of his bestselling novels have even been turned into movies. Much of Sparks writings are right out of North Carolina, where in real life, he grew up and lives with his family. Well, there is one book he wrote, that was inspired by a particular “real-life” location at Sunset Beach, on Bird Island, so I arranged a hotel stay, as close to Sunset Island that I could get. The rest of the adventure, would require lots of walking on the beach, to reach the very special “Kindred Spirit Mailbox” that is located in a Bird Sanctuary, on Bird Island. Chelsie had no idea what I had planned and I made sure it was a surprise. I bought her the book “Every Breath,” by Nicolas Sparks, and she opened it up at the hotel. I only explained that where I was taking her, for sunset, on her birthday was a real location at the beach that was a huge part of this book.
After a day of just goofing off, we enjoyed a very nice birthday dinner, out, to celebrate Chelsie. We both love seafood, the beach and everything and anything related to water. North Carolina is quite special and like Chelsie, I too have fallen in love with this coastal state, too.
After a yummy dinner at the Oyster Rock, and stuffed to the gills, we hopped back in the car and made our way to Sunset Beach, not too far away. It would have been much easier had there been parking at the Bird Island end, location, but all spots were full. This meant, we had to park the car about a half mile, further down the road at the Sunset Beach parking, and we would be walking more than the two miles, to get to the “surprise” location, before dark. Oops, we defiantly needed more time.
Just to make things even more interesting, we got to stop along the way to watch baby sea turtles hatch and make their way to the ocean. So the fact these turtles were born on Chelsie’s Birthday, made it even more special!!!
It was a very warm night, with hardly a breeze, so the beach walk was challenging for me, as I do not do well in the heat. North Carolina offers up very warm waters in the Atlantic in the summer, so there just was very little in the way of cool on this evening. We did get to enjoy a beautiful sunset, along the way, though, and this beach is truly known for having some of the best sunsets in the state. When all was said and done, including the stop to watch baby turtles, which we would not have wanted to miss, the entire adventure took far longer than expected, and we ended up reaching the Kindred Spirt Mailbox by dark, and not before…..oh well, it didn’t go without a hitch, but it was still fun, and Chelsie thought it was great.
We Made It!
Chelsie and I would both spend some time reading “letters” from inside the mailbox. Many people clearly made this walk and wrote down even the most intimate of messages, to leave inside the mailbox; indicating dates that went back for years. It was so interesting. Some messages wished for things, some were about heartbreaking loss over lost loved ones, and some were about failed relationships of all kinds that were difficult to manage. Not all messages were heavy about sadness or regret, though some were uplifting and wishing others well, on their journey of life.
All too soon, it was time to make it back to the car. It was a long walk back on the beach, in the dark, in the heat. I ended up walking to the parking lot from the beach, via the wooden walkway on Bird Island and Chels did the extra walk up the beach, to the public parking lot at Sunset Beach to get the car, and then she drove back to pick me up where I waited; where we both guzzle water like it was going out of style.
So yes, get the book “Every Breath” and read it. It’s a great story, even if you don’t get to the Mailbox in real life. All the characters in the book are fictional, but the “Kindred Spirit Mailbox” is very real, and that’s what made this Birthday Adventure special. Incidentally, in addition to the baby turtles hatching, along the way to the Mailbox, Chelsie discovered, from reading the plaque (on site) placed in honor of the man who put the mailbox up and maintained it; he passed away, on that very day, also on Chelsie’s birthday, just a few years, before.
*Goosebumps*
On our way back to home base, after such a fun get-a-way, we had to stop at a few other beaches, too: Holden and of course Onslow. We had fabulous weather, and more pretty sunsets!
All-in-all Chelsie’s birthday was a smashing hit for her, and any time I can whisk Chelsie away on an adventure is a hit for this mama!
