“Romania 🇷🇴 ~Driving Through Medias, after Leaving Sighişoara”

After touring the Sighişoara Citadel, we were back in the truck and heading for our next adventure, when, typical of me, I see a very tall steeple in a town from the distance. So, we entered another ancient town to check it out.

We brake for amazing Strongholds and Churches

About Medias
Although evidence of human presence in the area dates back to the middle-Neolithic,
Mediaş was first mentioned, in a written document, during the Roman occupation as Per Medias; meaning “the town at the crossroads.”
In 1283, after the Saxons settled in Transylvania, the city became Sacerdos de Medias, and in 1389, it was renamed Villa Medies.
The Fortified church of St. Margaret represented the core around which the citadel gradually developed.
The center of the ancient settlement of Medias has maintained a medieval feel with narrow winding lanes, centuries-old houses and a large square surrounded by colorful facades.

We happen to be in the region of Romania, where all the major Fortified Churches can be found, and that was very special. We did not stay long, but it was a worthy distraction

Leading us to the Historical Center
I was able to walk into the school, as the doors were open and there was a lot of activity happening in preparations for the new school year, which is about to start this month.People looked at me kind of funny, but nobody told me to get out. One thing I have going for me is locals think I’m German(everywhere we go in the world) Here in Romania, I fit in pretty well. When locals begin talking to me in German, I let them pause then I say, Im American, and speak English. The looks on the faces is priceless. Again, especially here, because Americans are not traveling to Europe right now…so how is it possible we are here? We love to answer that question.

The “Stephan Ludwig Roth” High School is one of the biggest schools in Medias, also the oldest high school in the city. The high school has a real tradition in the field of teaching in German, dosen of students graduate each year the 12th class, with high knowledge of German.
The school has his name from the well known pastor and teacher; Stephan Ludwig Roth, who participated on the 1948 Revolution and was, for several years, director of the former “German High School,”with rich the current high school bears his name.
The “Stephan Ludwig Roth” High School has a history that stretches more than 400 years.
The tall steeple that drew me in!
During the Middle Ages, Medias, like most other towns in Transylvania, was strongly fortified. The town has 33 craft guilds built, which maintained and defended the citadel’s towers and bastions, meant to protect Mediaş from invaders.
The Fortified Church of St. Margaret
Erected in the 15th century on the ruins of a Roman basilica,
the St. Margaret Evangelical Church, dominates Old Town Mediaş.
Two rows of walls; 24 ft. high and 3 ft. thick, surround the structure.
The church features three superb gothic altarpieces, a colorful baroque organ and early 15th century frescoes.
A wonderful collection of, 14th and 15th centuries, Oriental rugs and killims were
donated by local tradesmen, are on display.
There is a collection of Antique Ottoman Rugs in Transylvania on display
