“Ethiopia 🇪🇹 ~In Debrezeit”
Second of three full days driving, to make it to the East; to Harar, provided we have no issues getting all the way in to Harar.
Map: we are between Arba Minch and Harar for the night. After leaving Jinka, yesterday, and staying overnight in Arba Minch, then making our way to Debrezeit all day, today. (not on maps) … but it’s almost the full length of the country, to reach our destination.
The conflict has been several days between Muslims and Orthodox, and we were told the Muslims are blocking roads, and asking the people in their vehicles to recite the Koran for passage. If unable to recite, cars are being vandalized.
Harar is a very, very old piece of history in Africa and the world. We also paid for our flight from Harar back to Addis Ababa, on the 25th. No refunds on ticketing, since the airport has not been affected, and flights have been going in and out of the airport in Dire Dawa (nearest airport to Harar), daily.
Is this hype? We don’t know, but we will go as far as we can, and see.
For tonight, we are in a decent place, that feels like a little oasis in the desert; no working WiFi, but there have not been too many nice places along our tough journey, so we are enjoying this. We actually ordered lamb from the menu, and it was available. A real treat! That being said, all meat is chopped up and cooked. They call them “tins.” A steak or roast would be good, but it’s not how they do it, here.
We are a few days away from wrapping up our time in country. We will be leaving, very filled up on “all things Ethiopia” for sure, and looking forward to our three weeks in Egypt 🇪🇬, with seven of those days, floating on the Nile, by boat, and not traveling by truck. Pretty excited about that!
Tonight, we are having date night, and watching a movie on Netflix, if we can get WiFi to work.
