“USA 🇺🇸 Alaska ~Scenic Drive from Chistochina to Chicken!”

Chistochina, Alaska to Dawson City Yukon, then back to Alaska, to Haines, via Top Of The World Highway!!

Chistochina to Tok ⬇️

After leaving our lovely stay at Red Eagle Lodge in the cabin in Chistochina, we would continue o to travel along Wrangell-St Elias National Park.
We both fell in love with this area of Alaska, while there!

We came into Tok on a pretty good paved road. Must be mindful of frost heaves, every now and again. This was our second time through Tok, via a different direction, since the first of June. We fueled up, ate and did a grocery stop, as we were headed for Chicken, for our overnight, to get to the Yukon again; but this time, further north in the Yukon.

Tok to Chicken

As I’ve reported on many times before; driving the road systems in Alaska (and Canada) … only the mileage is accurate. The time it takes is WAY longer!

It would be a six-hour travel day to get to Chicken from Chistochina.

Not long after leaving Tok, on the nice paved road, we soon took the turn-off, at the Alaska Hwy 5     Junction, and were surprised the road was so bad, so quickly, before we even got to Chicken, let alone the Top Of The World Highway!

We really shouldn’t be too surprised by this point, but…yes, the road after Tok was a washboard disaster.
This early on the drive, we did stop and discuss, just how important it really was to visit Dawson City in the Yukon.

We decided to press on.

It took just under an hour (our stop in Tok), and just down the road a piece, Daryl did take a 20-minute Power Nap; in that six hour day.

About Chicken, Alaska ⬇️

This bird in the picture is a Ptarmigan

In the Gold Rush days, when Chicken was being established, they wanted to name the town Ptarmigan, after the many birds in the area, by this name. BUT, none of the prospectors could spell it, but they could spell Chicken, which they said looked like the same bird in a lot of ways.

We came into “Gold Camp” for our one night stay in Chicken. We had 30-amp power and there was a dump station.
This is the campground where I had to sign a waiver that I would pack all our trash out with us, and that we agreed to NOT come with full sewer tanks and empty water tanks. Once again, The Whale makes this drydocking spot very easy. We are completely self-contained and don’t require amenities, here. I was surprised our spot really had any power. It’s very remote.

There are showers and pit toilets for those that need them. Spendy at a pre-pay; $50 and had to pay $5 extra for parking our tow vehicle. Jonah is so tiny, she fit in our pull-through with The Whale, so there’s that lost fiver.

Our Chicken stop was fine for an overnight. As with every travel day on the Alaska road systems, we were pooped and hit the rack, early. We take a lot longer to get from point A to B, because we own our vehicles and take very good care of them (going slow) to avoid damage. Those in rental rvs with rental toads, fly by us, and we just cringe. We know they are rentals, because of the fleet stickers, or advertisements.
