“Turkey 🇹🇷 ~ The Colorful, Whimsical Balat District”

If you ever visit Istanbul, and we hope you do, don’t miss a chance to wander around the cobblestone streets of Balat! One can find these narrow cobblestone streets on the European side of the Golden Horn; a body of water that stands alone and flows Northwest from the Bosphorus Strait.

From the location of our flat, we are very near the Halic Station, so we walked across the metro bridge, to begin making our way to Balat.

There are plenty of coffee shops to enjoy in Balat, so go ahead and stop for a cup of tea, or the famous Turkish hot brew, if you desire; perfect opportunity to sit and “people watch,” Cats and dogs are also part of the scene, here.  They know their manners, so no worries. (just in case you are not a fan of the fur babies).  Interestingly enough, the dogs and cats of Istanbul are owned and cared for by the government. (see caption under animal photo for a local story).

Once you step inside Balat, you’ve stepped into an Istanbul of yester year.
The neighborhoods of Fatih, Fener and Balat are surely the ones that have the richest history in Istanbul. They are also on the list of the UNESCO heritage sites, and yet it is still a region that remains a secret.
We had fun losing ourselves for awhile in Balat, an area designed for doing just that, as the atmosphere is really unique.
The diversity of the Balat has rolled into the food options, providing cafe and restaurant which are truly spectacular. It’s the kind of district where you can’t really go wrong. Around each corner you will find a variety of oldest cafés in the city, or city’s oldest meyhane; a type of traditional dinner spot.
Balat is one of the oldest and most spectacular districts in all of Istanbul. The second you step foot along its narrow cobbled streets and historic buildings, you sense an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the city,, or indeed, the world.
The district is genuinely hidden away a little bit, set past the shores of Eminönü along the Golden Horn waters. The coastal road along the Golden Horn is extremely pleasant, with it’s massive parks, and where people can stroll along the promenade, all the way up to Pierre Loti at the end of the Golden Horn.
This gentleman was working hard carrying his mobile bread shop. He was happy to pose for photos in hope of making a sale.
We are always looking for pomegranate juice. Our favorite superfood!
Balat is a district that has traditionally been home to minorities in the city, with many Jewish and Greek Orthodox families making it their home.
If you love colorful design, you will love it here!
In this photo, you can see a bit of the Golden Horn waters
The markets along the winding cobbled streets are famous throughout the city for selling traditional wares and fresh fruit. Just the ambiance of the district is enough to make a stroll through the markets worth it. You won’t find any big brand names here, but you’ll find things the likes of which you can’t find anywhere else in the world.
Perhaps the most iconic part of Balat, is the district’s colorful homes along sloping cobbled streets. These homes are mostly over 50-years-old, and in some cases up to 200-years-old. These historic wooden homes are amongst the most photographed buildings in the city, and given its popularity many of these streets now host cafés and restaurants for you to stop off at and admire the setting
Hold on to you hats, because this vendor is selling intestine sandwiches. Yep, most likely sheep or goat “innards” rotisserie cooked.
If you see a dog with a colored divot in his ear, this marks the animal that is cared for by the government of Turkey. The digs and cats are spayed and/or neutered The animals have all their shots, too. The dogs and many cats, have no owners, and they lives on the street. As you can see from the size of the dogs, they do not go hungry, ever. Generous portions of food and fresh water are out in front of local businesses and homes, to help feed the hungry.
